The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on Tuesday announced that it will investigate patent infringement claims made by Samsung against Nvidia and several other companies, including Android console maker Ouya.

Samsung filed its complaint with the ITC in November, claiming Nvidia and others had violated four of its patents related to graphics processing technology. In a coordinated move, Samsung also filed suit in federal court against Nvidia, Biostar Microtech International, and Elitegroup Computer Systems.

The ITC probe will look into Samsung's patent infringement claims against Nvidia, Biostar Microtech, Elitegroup, EVGA, Fuhu, Jaton, Ouya, Mad Catz, Sparkle Computer, Toradex, Wikipad, and Zotac.

Samsung's complaints came in response to legal action initiated by Nvidia earlier this year. The graphics chip maker described the latest development as "typical legal ping pong."

Nvidia said it believed its own ITC case against Samsung would be the first to be decided in a series of legal actions between the two companies. The company also chided Samsung for involving several of its smaller partners.

"Samsung's cynical measure to blame our partners is unfair to these third parties and will create more negative fallout for the company. In the case of Velocity Micro, a small family business was named so that Samsung could attempt to get its case heard in the fast-moving local district court," Nvidia said in a blog post.

Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In September, Nvidia registered its own patent infringement claim with the ITC against Samsung and others over GPU technology. In addition to its ITC complaint, Nvidia filed patent lawsuits in Delaware against Samsung, Qualcomm, and Imagination Technologies.

In its September filing with the ITC, Nvidia asked the commission "to block shipments of Samsung Galaxy mobile phones and tablets containing Qualcomm's Adreno, ARM's Mali, or Imagination's PowerVR graphics architectures."

Nvidia's Tegra mobile processors with GPU functionality compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon and Samsung's Exynos chips.

In October, the ITC said it would investigate Nvidia's complaints.

Among the products Nvidia wants blocked are Samsung's Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy S4 smartphones, as well as the Galaxy Tab S, Galaxy NotePRO, and Galaxy Tab 2 tablets.

Nvidia said the seven patents it is claiming Qualcomm and Samsung have infringed concern GPU technologies like programmable shading, unified shaders, and multithreaded parallel processing.
